Sufis kept awake for their rituals with the help of coffee. and in the Safavid era coffee houses were established as places where poets and artists gathered and in 1664, Kashif al-Din, a Safavi pharmacologist, dedicated a treatise on the merits and morality of coffee to ShahAbbasII.
